What It's Like To Be A Basejumper

On some shoots, everything has to go right. On this one, it wasn’t optional.

We spent a day with professional BASE jumper Clair Marie, better known as “BASE Girl.” She made her first jump at 16, making her one of the youngest BASE jumpers in the sport’s history, and she’s been a true daredevil ever since.

Shooting on a cliff means working with whatever nature gives you: wind, shifting light, and footing that doesn’t forgive mistakes. I was hanging off the edge to get the shot, eyes locked on the monitor the entire time. Part of that was the job. Part of it was that I didn’t want to watch her jumps with my own eyes.

When someone is doing something this death-defying, the crew and the athlete have to move as one. A missed cue isn’t a bad take. It’s a real risk for everyone involved. I love that kind of pressure. It makes everyone sharper.
