Danny Dwyer

Dextro Cardia Short Film

My first film. I was 19, armed with a Bolex, a few rolls of 16mm, and absolutely no idea what I was getting into, well more or less.

We shot it at my sister’s house, where I promptly burned a hole in her carpet. Then I learned the hard way that a wind-up Bolex only runs about 25 to 30 seconds at 24 frames per second. One take in, my whole shot list went out the window, and I rebuilt it on the spot.

My mentor, Alan Myerson, once told me that the mistakes you make when you’re young become your style later on. I took that to heart. The errors in the edit stayed in.

I also spent my rent money getting the last four rolls developed and transferred, and got evicted for it. Would I do that again? Absolutely not. Could I, even if I tried? Probably not. But looking back, those were the glory days.

Oh, and the local police department handed me the keys to their historic squad car for the shoot. The officer looked at me and said, “Oh boy we remember you.”

This one lives here purely for entertainment. It’s young, broke, independent filmmaking at its finest. Hit me up if you want the full story. Enjoy.
